Safe Zones Resuscitate Theatre

Categories :Uncategorized

This week, the Government launched the Safe Zones Initiative as a method of encouraging commerce during tough economic times caused by the pandemic. Especially hit by COVID-19 restrictions, is the entertainment sector and live entertainment in particular. I had no idea in February when I hit the stage that that electric feeling of connecting with the audience would have been so fleeting. After the surge in infections, restrictions were implemented curtailing the plans so many thespians had of getting back to business. Half of the year has gone without us being able to get on stage but now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccinations have enabled us to get to a place of relative comfort, and the Safe Zone Initiative heralds the return to commerce and perhaps, the stage for many, as theatres and dancehalls are able to operate at 50% seating capacity for patrons with proof of vaccination. Though I don’t necessarily believe that distinguishing patrons is essential, I feel optimistic about this new development. I am anxious to return to the stage and to reconnect with my theatre family, my tribe. We suffered another terrible loss as a theatre community recently with Clifford’s passing, even on the heels of losing the giant that was Mr. J.H. Smith, but Cliff was a gifted and versatile actor that leaves an inspirational legacy. In the spirit of honouring all those who have gone before us, we have to continue, by any means necessary. We continue to be resilient and I anticipate eagerly what the last quarter of 2021 might bring now that we are able to get back to the sparkle and shine of the stage!
